New Patients FAQs

You will be welcomed into our office and given some paperwork to complete. After you’ve been checked in, one of our dental assistants will take you back to an exam room to review your dental and medical history. If needed or if you haven’t moved your records over,  X-rays and digital photographs of your mouth may be taken.

After that, you’ll meet your new dentist and talk about your oral health. Your dentist will go over your medical history and address any problems you may have. Your dentist will then put together a treatment plan for you, and you will be able to schedule your next appointment.

You may be required to complete paperwork such as patient health history. But not to worry, we will let you know which documents apply to you and support you through the documentation process. A list of any current medications you’re taking, as well as any notes about your medical and dental history are essential items to bring. You can also request that your dental records be moved to our office by contacting your previous dental care provider. This can be beneficial if you came to our office in the middle of a dental treatment.

During your first appointment with us, we usually do not include a dental cleaning service. Your first dental appointment will focus on comprehensive examination so that we can assess your dental care needs and concerns.

Before receiving a professional cleaning, certain dental concerns might need to be addressed. Similarly, if we detect early signs of gum disease, we’ll customise your dental cleaning to include periodontal therapy.

As soon as your initial exam is completed, we can schedule your first dental cleaning once one of our hygienists is available.

You can request that a copy of your records be moved from your previous dentist once you’ve chosen a new dentist. Dentists are required by their provincial dental regulatory body to maintain all their records for a specific period of time.

Your previous dental clinic may require you to sign a release form, and you may be charged an administrative fee for having your records duplicated and forwarded to another dental practice. If you have any queries concerning the records transfer process in your province, contact the provincial dental regulatory body or ask your dentist.

Inquire with your family and friends to see if they have any recommendations for a dentist. Other people in your community, such as your doctor, might be able to help. You can also search for a dentist in your area on the websites of provincial dental associations. 

Call the dentist office once you’ve limited your list down to two or three names to check whether they’re taking new customers. This first call may also offer you a sense of the workplace environment, but nothing beats a first visit to see if it’s a suitable fit for you.

You should also consider location, hours of practice, language(s) spoken and specialist care offerings.

The CDA recommends that infants be examined by a dentist between six months of the growth of their first tooth or one year of age.

It’s important to begin dental care at a young age so that your child learns that going to the dentist is a necessary part of good health care.

It’s important to make your child’s first visit a happy one, which is why it is preferable to go before an issue arises. If you suspect a problem, however, take your child to the dentist as soon as possible, regardless of age.
