5 Tips for a Smooth Dental Implant Recovery
Dental implant surgery, like any medical procedure, can be intimidating. There is also a period of healing required to fully recover from the surgery.
It’s important to remember that recovery time can vary from person to person based on several factors including the number of extractions required, the placement of the implants, and the health of your jawbone.
At Warmstone, we take the time to explain recovery instructions to ensure you’re well-prepared for a smooth recovery.
5 Tips for Recovery After Dental Implant Surgery
Alongside specific instructions from our dental team, here are 5 tips for recovery after dental implant surgery:
Take It Easy
The number one thing your body needs for a smooth recovery is rest! Pushing yourself to try and get back to your “regularly scheduled programming” will only slow down your recovery.
Taking it easy is crucial in the days that follow your dental implant surgery. This means, no heavy lifting, no intense workouts, or any other strenuous activity. The last thing you want to do is dislodge a blood clot, which can lead to bleeding.
Staying hydrated is essential after having dental implant surgery. While in recovery, it can be easy to forget to drink water. However, proper hydration allows you to flush toxins that might hinder the recovery process.
Drink plenty of water and avoid caffeine and alcohol. It’s also recommended to avoid using a straw since the suction motion can pop stitches or dislodge blood clots.
Eat Soft & Nutritious Food
Your diet after dental implant surgery can have a significant impact on your recovery. In the first few days following the surgery, you should avoid hot and spicy foods or anything that requires chewing. These foods might cause bleeding or irritation. You’ll want to stick to a soft food diet once the surgical site heals.
As tempting as it is to just eat boxed macaroni and cheese or canned soup, it’s important to keep a healthy diet while in recovery. Your body needs the proper nutrients to be able to heal smoothly.
Use a Salt Water Rinse
24 hours after the surgery, we recommend that you start using a saltwater rinse to decrease bacteria build-up without causing irritation. Simply mix 1 cup of warm water and ¼ teaspoon of salt. For the first 3 days, gently rinse your mouth with salt water every 2 hours. After that, you can just rinse after each meal.
Maintain Your Oral Hygiene Routine
Although the area will be tender, it’s still essential to maintain proper oral hygiene. At various stages of your recovery, this might look a bit different! For instance, we do not recommend flossing the area surrounding the surgical site until it has completely healed since this could cause irritation and bleeding. You should also be gentle when you’re brushing as the bristles will also aggravate the area. Ask our team about specific oral hygiene instructions on the day of your surgery!
